Natural Great Peace
Rest in natural great peace this exhausted mind,
Beaten helpless by karma and neurotic thoughts,
Like the relentless fury of the pounding waves
In the infinite ocean of samsara.

"Theravada Buddhism has never gotten proper attention in the literature devoted to Buddhism in the West. "

How do we look at what is happening in the West following the first generation of Buddhism in the West? When researcher Wendy Cagle looked at Buddhist in American twenty years ago, she found two groups: one Asian and the other White converts.

Was the experience of these groups close enough to not dismiss the other?

Although the Pali word “Sati” has several meanings such as memory, mindfulness, recollection and wakefulness, in Buddhist teachings it is generally considered as the mindful awareness to the content of one’s experience as it manifests from moment to moment in the immediate present. There are two main types of meditation in Theravada Buddhism:

Practicing Samatha-Bhavana

Concentration or

Simple Point of Focus Meditation

Practicing Vipassana-Bhavana

Non-judgmental self-observation

We are seeking volunteers to assist with future Saturday Sangha meetings, including setting up, greeting visitors, and providing technical support at the Library. One way to help is to arrive early at the Library (~10:10 am) to help set up the room for Saturday Sangha. Thank you!

Community Resources

Melanie Stengel is the Sangha's Goodwill Ambassador: if have a need for concrete support (e.g., dog care, food, furniture moving) or emotional support (e.g., going through a hard time, would appreciate check-ins or visits), please reach out to her for coordination by clicking here: SanghaGoodwillAmbassador.

For supportive telephone conversation, warm lines are another resource. These phone lines are staffed by people with expertise in providing mutual aid. A list of Connecticut's warm lines is available here.
