What Parenting Has Taught Me About Mindfulness

by Jay Michaelson, Ph.D, meditatiehappier.com

My daughter is about to turn two years old, but I still describe my partner and myself as “new parents,” since we still seem to be figuring everything out by the seats of our pants. Pretty much every day, I’ve had one thought in particular: I have no idea how people without a mindfulness practice do this. In fact, while mindfulness has taught me a lot about being a better parent, parenting has taught me even more about the value of mindfulness.

Watching waterbirds
playing without a care on the pond
while knowing deeply
that beneath the surface calm
they, too, struggle with the world.

"One tendency of our mind is to want to think about the sounds, to start to make up a story about the sound, or we have a reaction to it: I like it, I don’t like it. See if instead, you can simply listen to the sound."

How To Meditate with Noise:

A 3-Minute Practice for Anywhere

By Diana Winston, May 2017, mindful.org

Some practical structure for your practice when the noise level is a challenge. Guidance through being present to the judgemental thoughts as they arise and an animated gif to help with observing breath.

Begin this meditation by noticing the posture that you’re in. You may be standing or sitting or lying down.

Notice your body exactly as it is. See if you can tune in to any sensations that are present to you in your body in this moment. There might be heaviness or lightness, pressure, weight. There might be vibration, pulsating, movement, warmth, coolness, These sensations can be anywhere in your body, and all you have to do is notice them. Notice what’s happening with curiosity and interest.

We are seeking volunteers to assist with future Saturday Sangha meetings, including setting up, greeting visitors, and providing technical support at the Library. One way to help is to arrive early at the Library (~10:10 am) to help set up the room for Saturday Sangha. Thank you!

Community Resources

Melanie Stengel is the Sangha's Goodwill Ambassador: if have a need for concrete support (e.g., dog care, food, furniture moving) or emotional support (e.g., going through a hard time, would appreciate check-ins or visits), please reach out to her for coordination by clicking here: SanghaGoodwillAmbassador.

For supportive telephone conversation, warm lines are another resource. These phone lines are staffed by people with expertise in providing mutual aid. A list of Connecticut's warm lines is available here.
